Monique & Julia
Empowerment & Life Skills Participant, Fargo-Moorhead
Monique, the mother of 2-year-old Julia, completed empowerment training with Jeremiah Program Fargo-Moorhead in spring 2016. Before that, she says, “I was just a single mom who didn’t have the necessary skills to cope with the struggle of being a single mother. I had no direction that I wanted to go in my life.”
She also was struggling with the fear of failing if she returned to school. “I was feeling worthless and stuck,” she says. But through her work with Jeremiah, she gained confidence and skills. “Whenever I am facing a stressful situation, I do positive self-talk, which is one of the skills I learned in empowerment.” This fall she enrolled in Jeremiah’s life skills classes, which she found equally as helpful.
Monique has returned to college at North Dakota State University, majoring in psychology. Her daughter is thriving as well. “Before Jeremiah, my child never really got to be around children her own age. Through Jeremiah, she has come out of her shell.”
Most of all, Monique has learned that she didn’t need to give up her own dreams to raise her child. “It isn’t one or the other,” she explains. “You can still have hopes and goals for yourself, and by doing so you show your child to hope and dream also.”
