“We cannot allow politics to disrupt people’s livelihoods — especially in this moment when families are already being asked to do more with less.”

Minneapolis — (January 7, 2026) — Chastity Lord, President and CEO of Jeremiah Program — a national nonprofit with one of the nation’s most successful strategies for disrupting generational poverty for single mothers and their children — issued the following statement regarding the nationwide freeze on federal child care funding:

“Jeremiah Program (JP) is deeply concerned by the freeze on federal child care funding that helps low-income families afford essential care — and the immediate uncertainty it creates for families and providers across the country. While this action has been described as tied to efforts to strengthen oversight and verification of federal funds, it unfairly punishes and will create a new set of issues for the vast majority of child care providers and programs that are working tirelessly in the best interests of the families they serve.

Child care access is already strained across the country, and the impact of a freeze would be incredibly disruptive across communities, workforce systems, and local economies nationwide. When child care becomes unreliable, workforce participation drops, educational progress stalls, and families are pushed further from economic mobility. This freeze has far-reaching implications and a chain reaction of consequences.

We cannot allow politics to disrupt people’s livelihoods — especially in this moment when families are already being asked to do more with less. We urge federal leaders to act quickly to restore CCAP funding, and ensure that oversight measures do not come at the cost of families’ ability to care for their children. Child care is essential infrastructure for families, for programs like ours, and for America’s workforce. Our moms are working hard to provide stability for their children — and they deserve support from the very systems meant to help them succeed.

At JP, we are assessing the broader impact on both the moms who rely on this funding, as well as our own operations. Our goal remains to continue to provide resources, support and care for our moms and their children.”

About Jeremiah Program: Jeremiah Program (JP) is a national organization whose mission is to disrupt the cycle of poverty for single mothers and their children, two generations at a time.
