MINNEAPOLIS, September 16, 2026: Jeremiah Program (JP) today announced the appointment of Chavon Mitchell as Chief External Affairs Officer (CXO). Mitchell brings more than 20 years of nonprofit fundraising and communications experience to the national organization, which works to disrupt the cycle of poverty for single mothers and their children.

Mitchell joins JP from The Marshall Project, the nonprofit newsroom covering the U.S. criminal justice system, where she served as Chief Development Officer leading their fundraising efforts both locally and nationally for the last four years. She previously served as Vice President of Development and External Affairs at Heart of America, a national education nonprofit, and as Senior Managing Director of Development at Teach For America. Her career spans arts and culture, education, and criminal justice journalism.

“Chavon brings dynamic experience in fundraising, communications, and storytelling, and we are thrilled to welcome her to the Jeremiah Program family,” said Chastity Lord, President and CEO of Jeremiah Program. “Her perspective and expertise will be an important addition as we continue expanding our national reach and advancing our mission.”

Mitchell will help elevate Jeremiah Program’s national positioning while leading fundraising, marketing, storytelling, and communications efforts under one executive leader for the first time. Her leadership will help strengthen how JP connects its mission, stories, and impact with funders, partners, media, and broader audiences.

As part of this work, Mitchell will also help advance the organization’s civic engagement efforts as the 2026 midterm elections and upcoming 2030 Census approaches. This includes supporting JP’s Get Out the Vote (GOTV) “We Have The Numbers” pledge initiative, which provides single mothers and their families with resources, information about back-up childcare, and other critical resources that impact a successful voting for single moms.

“I have spent my career raising money and telling stories for organizations that believe in what people can do when they are given a real chance, and Jeremiah Program lives that belief every day,” said Mitchell. “Investing in a mother and her children at the same time changes the outcome for an entire family. I look forward to bringing my experience in fundraising, communications, and storytelling to expand what JP can do for the moms and kids it serves.”

Mitchell graduated cum laude from Xavier University in Cincinnati with a degree in communication arts, a concentration in public relations, and a minor in Spanish. Living in Charlotte, NC, she has served on the boards of UNC Charlotte’s Women + Girls Research Alliance and the Charlotte Chamber Young Professionals and in a leadership role at Newell Presbyterian Church.
