“Childcare in this country has been fundamentally flawed for so long.”
MINNEAPOLIS – April 20, 2023 – Chastity Lord, President and CEO of Jeremiah Program — a national nonprofit with one of the nation’s most successful strategies for disrupting generational poverty for single mothers and their children — issued the following statement regarding President Biden’s Executive Order on childcare.
“Childcare is one of the most critical pieces of our country’s pie, yet it has been fundamentally flawed for so long. The expense and burden have been especially challenging for single mothers, who not only need childcare, but are often the ones filling those positions for low wages and limited flexibility — creating a vicious economic cycle.
In the absence of viable childcare options, mothers are often forced to modify their work schedules, settle for lower-quality care, or leave the workforce altogether — a decision that can jeopardize their family’s financial security.
We are heartened by the actions of the Biden administration to expand and guarantee access to affordable childcare for families. Continuous investment intended to protect and provide resources for children and families, especially single mothers, will aid in transforming them from poverty to prosperity. This is a strong first step, and we look forward to seeing continued commitment and action to ensure mothers and their children no longer need to struggle.”
