LAS VEGAS (February 1, 2023)—Jeremiah Program (JP), a national nonprofit with one of the most successful strategies for disrupting generational poverty among single mothers and their children, is proud to announce that Gard Jameson will serve as the chair of the Las Vegas campus’ Community Board of Trustees.
“Gard Jameson is a distinguished leader in the Nevada community, and we are excited and grateful to join forces to leverage his perspectives and expertise in launching the Las Vegas campus,” said Maria Tucker, Executive Director, Jeremiah Program Las Vegas. “The board is essential to establishing a strong foundation for JP Las Vegas especially as we deepen relationships with local leaders, strengthen programmatic quality and impact, and expand JP’s reach to 300 moms and kids.”
Jameson launched Compassionate Las Vegas for non-profit leaders working with marginalized, underserved populations. He co-founded the boards of the Children’s Advocacy Alliance, the Interfaith Council of Southern Nevada and Volunteers in Medicine, VMSN.org. He played key roles in establishing the Nevada Community Foundation. Jameson serves on the boards of the Global Charter for Compassion and the Alf Museum of Life in Claremont, CA.
“Education is the key lever for economic mobility,” said Jameson. “I’m thrilled to support the launch of JP Las Vegas, a much-needed organization, doing the hard work to help families two-generations at a time. The most troubling statistic in Nevada comes from the West Side wherein single mothers are dying prematurely. I look forward to learning what we can achieve together to change the culture for the wellbeing of all.”
Jameson received his Ph.D. from Pacifica Graduate Institute in 2005 and a B.A. in Religious Studies from Stanford University in 1975. He teaches Chinese and Indian philosophy in the Philosophy Department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Prior to his tenure at UNLV, he spent 25 years practicing as a Certified Public Accountant and Director of Financial Planning at Piercy, Bowler, Taylor & Kern and Touche Ross. He is the author of five books, The Beatitudes, Peace Pilgrim Pictures, and The Ramayana, Monkey, and Phaethon (Our Mythic Moment series), numinous tales from epic literature illustrating the human condition.
JP Las Vegas was established in 2022 at the invitation of local partners, including Acelero Learning Clark County. This critical partnership ensures the second generation, JP kids, benefit from high-quality early education. The organization’s second-generation programming includes back-up childcare support, private tutoring, summer enrichment experiences and other developmental opportunities for JP kids.
The first two cohorts of over 60 JP Las Vegas moms and kids are a diverse group who live in North, West and East Las Vegas who are preparing to or are already enrolled in higher education. The JP Las Vegas model is reflective of both the community and the organization’s commitment to building strong partnerships across the city in support of economic mobility for single moms and their kids. JP believes moms are the architects of their own solutions and thus Las Vegas moms are creating a powerful sisterhood with impactful connections that uplift one another and enhance each other’s lives.
About Jeremiah Program: Jeremiah Program (JP) is a national organization whose mission is to disrupt the cycle of poverty for single mothers and their children, two generations at a time. JP believes the impacts of generational poverty require the centering of the family unit through a two-generation (2Gen) approach. By investing simultaneously in a mother’s vision for her personal and professional goals and the education of her children, she simultaneously reauthors her family’s outcome as well her community’s –proof points matter. In 2021, JP supported 1,100 moms and children across seven cities in Austin, TX; Boston, MA; Brooklyn, NY; Fargo, ND-Moorhead, MN; Minneapolis, MN; Rochester, MN; and St. Paul, MN. In the fall of 2022, JP is launching two additional campuses in Baltimore, MD and Las Vegas, NV.
