Minneapolis, Minn. (October 30, 2025)—With the federal government shutdown leaving vital assistance programs in limbo, Jeremiah Program (JP) — a national nonprofit with one of the nation’s most successful strategies for disrupting generational poverty for single mothers and their children — is launching a social media campaign to share families’ stories and raise emergency funds for those affected.

On November 1, nearly 2,000 JP moms and children will lose access to their SNAP and WIC payments — lifelines that help put food on the table. The average monthly SNAP benefit is about $190. That may not sound like much, but for more than 22 million families in the U.S., it’s everything. That’s why JP is calling on the community to raise $190,000 — enough to cover essential needs for every affected family this November.

“We want to put a face to this moment and are committed to sharing the stories and impact on single-parent families — which make up 30% of families in this country — with 80% of those being led by single mothers,” said Chastity Lord, President and CEO, Jeremiah Program.

The shutdown has halted or delayed multiple safety net programs, including WIC, SNAP, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Section 8 Housing, and childcare subsidies. These disruptions force single mothers and their children to navigate crisis after crisis, often without warning or support.

“America has a cold — which means women will get the flu, and working-class and lower income families will get pneumonia,” added Lord. “It is important to remember that these families were not given the opportunity to plan and budget for this moment. How do you shop for groceries without knowing how many days or months you need the food to last? We recognize that this campaign is not a permanent plan, but we are committed to telling the stories of single moms who understand how expensive it is to be poor in America.”

With nine campuses across the country, JP supports single mothers and their children with access to college, quality childcare, affordable housing, community support and leadership training. JP’s emergency appeal provides a way for neighbors, donors, and partners to make an immediate, tangible difference.
